Paju City – located in northeastern Gyeonggi Province – is bordered by Gimpo City to the west, Yangju City and Yeoncheon County to the east, Goyang City to the south, and Kaesong City (North Korea) and the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to the north. Promoted from county to city level in 1996, Paju is often referred to as the gateway to Korean reunification as it is where Panmunjom (the site where the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement was signed) is located.

Apart from Panmunjom, the city encompasses various other sites that pertain to North Korea, including Dorasan Station (the northern terminus of Korail’s Gyeongui Line and a symbol of hope for Korean reunification) and Imjingak (a park developed to console North and South Koreans who are unable to return to their hometowns and see their loved ones because of national division).

The Let's DMZ Festival, which celebrated its second anniversary in 2020, showcases a variety of content to promote the spirit and value of the Pyongyang Joint Declaration signed on September 19, 2018. The Live in DMZ Concert features performances by famous K-pop and traditional Korean music artists. It also includes the 'DMZ Village' where peace-themed artwork is exhibited. Paju Policies for 2021
In order to improve quality of life for its residents, Paju City has announced four main policies for 2021.The first policy is geared to revitalize the local economy, which has been impacted by the global pandemic. Loan interest support for small business owners and online services for traditional markets are being implemented. In addition, to boost youth start-ups, rent support for young entrepreneurs and funding for tuition fee repayment will be promoted.
The second policy encompasses 'inclusive welfare' through which incentives will be provided to participants in an employment program among those who receive Basic Livelihood Security support. Baby bonuses will also be provided.
The third policy, "Transportation Innovation," is structured to provide comfortable transportation services to residents. It will increase public transportation convenience by addressing issues in areas prone to congestion, enabling the establishment of more metropolitan express bus routes, encouraging the improvement of call taxi mobile applications, and propelling the implementation of a mobility handicapped smart traversal system for pedestrian signals.
The fourth policy has been devised to develop rural areas of the city. Residential environments in underdeveloped areas will be improved through the demolition and/or renovation of empty dwellings. It will also promote local agricultural products by promoting various agro-product fairs and enabling the establishment of a food safety department.
