Check out the most recent news about Gimpo city - from Gimpo International Airport to its plan for Environmental energy.
Gimpo City, located in Gyeonggi Province, is bordered by Incheon City to the west and faces the North Korean city of Kaesong across the DMZ. The city had a population of 496,008 people as of January 2020 and occupies a total area of 276.6 square kilometers. Gimpo International Airport was formerly located inside Gimpo City but is now in western Seoul due to jurisdictional changes.
The area is famous for the Gimpo Plain that formed in the estuary of the Hangang River. The area has been widely used for rice cultivation for millennia and is renowned as a source of rice that was presented to Korean kings. In addition, the Gimpo Plain is considered to be the first site of rice cultivation on the Korean Peninsula as 5000-year-old carbonized rice has been found here. In modern times, land use of the plain area has changed significantly as residential areas have been developed here.
Gimpo City is also home to famous Korean performers including the actor Cho Jung-seok and Sowon of Girlfriends.
Considering Elecle’s high utilization rate, a total of 300 vehicles will be put into service through the addition of 100 bikes to the current 200. Elecle is planning to increase the number of its bikes up to 400 after monitoring the current usage patterns. Of particular note, the additional Elecle bikes to be deployed will be the first in Korea to incorporate an automatic locking system and Internet of Things (IoT) functionality in the cell phone holder space.
The fee for use of an Elecle bike is KRW 1,100 for the first five minutes and KRW 100 for each additional minute, with a KRW 100 discount applied when the bike is returned the designated collection area. Gimpo City is considering the establishment of a bicycle culture department so as to promote the use of bicycles with the introduction of Elecle.
To this end, in addition to the establishment and maintenance of bicycle paths, various plans will be formulated to encourage the use of bicycles by utilizing the characteristics of Gimpo, which has a lot of flat areas, and the introduction of specialized programs.
The Gyeonggi Institute of Environmental Energy, which will play a central role in the Green New Deal of the Korean national government, will have a mandate for fine dust reduction and renewable energy development while concurrently researching, planning and supporting environmental initiatives, energy projects and other endeavors.
