Hanam is one of the up-and-coming cities in South Korea with its improvement in accessibility and beautiful landmarks.
Hanam city is located in the middle east of Gyeonggi Province. It is a satellite city of Seoul and was promoted into the city in 1989. The name “Hanam” was named after Hanam Wirye Fortress(하남위례성), known as the capital of Baekje in ancient history. Moreover, the Chinese character of Hanam is composed of 河(The river, meaning Hangang River) 南(South) which explains the location of the city. The living area of the city is quite small compared to other Gyeonggi cities (93km²) as 77% of the city is designated as a green belt (development restricted). It is bordered by Namyangju to the north across the Hangang River, Seoul to the west, Yangpyeong to the west and Gwangju City to the south. As it is right next to the east side of Seoul City, it is one of the accessible cities in Gyeonggi Province by road to Seoul. As of 2020 August, Metropolitan Subway Line 5 was extended to Hanam City which highly improved the accessibility to Seoul city.
Current Policy
Vitalizing the Economy
In 2021, Hanam City will push for various projects to vitalize the city’s economy. Job projects, including the public work of the vulnerable, who are unemployed or have closed businesses and introducing a new youth internship project. In addition, they will issue KRW 90 billion of local currency in order to save the depressed small business owners and the corner stores. Lastly, the city also plans to foster innovative companies to prepare for the fourth industrial revolution through “Hanam Digital Camp” and “Hanam Startup Campus”.Education for the Future
Hanam City has expanded 14 government-run childcare centers in 20219 and 9 more in 2020. By 2021, they plan to create the highest level of childcare environment in the province by expanding 17 more centers. The main theme of Hanam City’s education in 2021 is to foster creative talent suitable for the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and to improve its capabilities in preparation for the post-Covid 19 eras. To this end, the city created a contactless educational environment and implementing a wide range of hands-on outdoor learning programs. |

Starfield Hanam Shopping Center
Starfield Hanam is a shopping complex owned by Shinsegae (Owner of Emart and Shinsegae Department Store) which opened in 2016 September. It is the largest shopping mall in Korea as of 2021, boasting a total floor area of 460,000 meter square and a shopping area of 156,000 meter square. |

Inside the mall, there is Emart Traders (Warehouse type mart very similar to Costco), Electromart (They focus on men’s taste), the first Tesla retail store in Korea, Shinsegae Department Store, and many other brands. Apart from shopping brands, there are huge cinemas, Sports Monster (Indoor sports entertainment), and Aquafield (indoor swimming pool and Korean spa “Jjimjilbang”).
Hanam Union Park
The Union Tower is Korea’s first environmental facility to install waste disposal facilities and sewage treatment facilities underground. It was constructed as additional environmental facilities were required due to the development of the new satellite city. Underground facilities include incineration facilities, recycling facilities, food composting facilities, and sewage treatment facilities. On the ground, there is Hanam Union Park Tower(105m) with various resident-friendly facilities such as a lawn field, water park for children, multi-purpose gymnasium and outdoor sports grounds.
