Children's Day: Gyeonggi for Children

Gyeonggi Province is committed to providing all possible support to raising future generations that are healthy and happy. The contents of Gyeonggi-do’s major policies for child care and protecting their rights are as follows:

Fostering a Safe Environment for Children

Gyeonggi-do has expanded child care services, such as child care centers, and secured a safety net to rescue children who are in danger of child abuse. The government will also reduce the financial burden of raising children by extending child allowances and meal support projects for undernourished children, and strengthen support for the self-reliance of those who graduate from child protection services.

Offering Stable Child Care Services

The Gyeonggi Provincial Government enacted the Ordinance on Child Care Support in January 2021 to enforce consistent child care policies. With this legislative foundation, the government plans to resolve gaps in child care by expanding care institutions this year. The Gyeonggi-do Children's Care Center will operate in four places – including Paju, Gwangmyeong, and Hwaseong – to provide a holistic care service. Of particular note, the government plans to carry out a new elementary school care project, establishing collaboration between local governments and schools. Last but not least, Gyeonggi-do will expand its care centers to 168 locations this year to address blind spots in after-school care, and increase the number of local children's centers up to 790 locations.

Eradicating Child Abuse & Expanding Safety Nets

Gyeonggi Province is devoted to putting an end to child abuse. Gyeonggi-do conducted a full survey of all three to six-year-olds who did not use childcare facilities last year. During this process, children in crisis were linked to welfare services in January 2021. Taking this a step further, Gyeonggi-do will expand the number of child abuse prevention specialists in its 31 cities and counties to 143 this year so as to further strengthen child safety. Additionally, training for responsible public officials as well as publicity and education to raise public awareness will be expanded. The province plans to enhance its role as a control tower and reinforce its partnership with the National Police Agency and the Office of Education by activating the "Gyeonggi-do Child Protection Organization."

Cultivating a Climate for Child Growth

All children under the age of seven living in Gyeonggi-do shall receive KRW 100,000 per month, and KRW 6,000 in meal support will be allocated to undernourished children. In addition, the government will increase child support for each child to KRW 300,000 a month while also allocating settlement aid of up to KRW 10 million - the highest in the nation - for the self-reliance of those who graduate from foster care.
