Paldang Chogyeguksu (Chilled Chicken Soup with Noodles) in Hanam City
Chogyeguksu, inspired by Pyeongan Province’s famous chogyetang (chilled chicken soup), is a dish served with noodles that many consider to be stamina-enhancing health food. “Chogye” is a Pyeongan Province dialect that implies vinegar and mustard with chicken. Hanam’s first restaurant to present chogyeguksu originally started as a kalguksu (noodle soup) restaurant. However, sales were slower than expected, compelling the owner to develop a new menu item: chogyeguksu. Hanam has beautiful bike paths, and since chogyeguksu is a favorite dish of many cyclists, the new menu became an instant hit.Paldang Chogyeguksu restaurant in Hanam ⓒGyeonggi Province |

This restaurant magically invokes the power if its signature dish. Manghyang means “homesickness,” signifying how the noodles chase away homesickness with a taste of home. Thick, chewy noodles and the sour-yet-sweet-and-spicy sauce are super refreshing. This dish has less broth than a noodle soup dish, but more than a typical spicy noodle dish. You might be familiar with Manghang spicy noodles since the dish appeared in the movie Steel Rain. Actor Kwak Do-won told actor Jung Woo-sung that it was his favorite noodle restaurant during his military service while heartily devouring a bowl of spicy noodles.
