There are many traditional games played in the alleyways of Korea back in days such as squid game, marble game, hacky sack, and more.
Children's games, rowdy alleyways
Games played by Korean children back in days gone by are receiving global attention as the Netflix series Squid Game gains ever greater popularity. We are going to introduce some of the old games that were commonplace in the alleyways of Korea.Jegichagi (a form of hacky sack) is a Korean traditional outdoor game in which players kick a paper jegi into the air as many time as they can without dropping it |
Before the advent of modern Korea, natural objects were commonly used traditional games including stone-throwing games (biseokchigi) and a version of hacky sack (jegichagi). During the Japanese occupation of Korea, games evolved to use man-made objects, such as marbles (guseulchigi). Hand-clapping games such as "sse-sse-sse" also appeared. In the game guseulchigi, the objective is to throw marbles inside a hole or hit an opponent’s marbles to acquire them. After the Korean War, jumping rope using elastic bands (gomujulnori) became popular. In gomujulnori, players skip using an extended rubber rope while performing set movements according to songs. Moreover, Koreans traditionally played tug-of-war every year to promote social cohesion and solidarity while marking the start of the agricultural season.

Gyeonggi Province is introducing experiential programs to develop seven popular alleyways and streets as tourist attractions
In October, Gyeonggi Province introduced alleyway tour programs and experiential programs incorporating seven popular alleyways and streets based on local stories such as Budaejjigae Street in Uijeongbu. Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization recently reported that they have completed preparations for the seven locations selected for the 2021 Gyeonggi Tourism Themed Alleyways program announced in April. The two partners worked on tourist product development, photo zone creation, and promotional content production – as well as on the strengthening of participating resident capabilities – for the launch of the experiential programs. In order to increase local area competitiveness in the tourism market and develop unique resources, Gyeonggi Province introduced the 2021 Gyeonggi Tourism Themed Alleyways program last year, and has been operating it since. The locations selected for the program this year are: Nopbitgoeul-gil in Goyang City; Manserogunha-gil in Gimpo City; Budaejjigae Street in Uijeongbu City; Gyeonggi Cheonnyeon Theme Street in Yangpyeong County; Gyeonchunseon Line Time Travel Street in Gapyeong County; Marina Street in Hwaseong City; and the Coastal Road on Oido Island of Siheung City.
