International Express Mail Service from Korea? Gyeonggi Province helps you
If you have a multicultural family like this, you may need to send mail to other countries for various reasons such as the provision of documents. At such times, the most commonly used postal system is the ‘Express Mail Service (EMS)’.
To help multicultural families establish themselves and to reduce the economic burden caused by frequent mailing, Gyeonggi Province (Gyeonggi-do) is operating a year-round 10% EMS rate reduction system in partnership with the Gyeongin Regional Post Office!

What is the year-round 10% EMS rate reduction system?
This rate reduction system has been provided by Gyeonggi-do and the Gyeongin Regional Post Office since 2011 to help multicultural families quickly establish themselves in Korea and reduce their economic burden. Multicultural family members who were not born – such as marriage immigrants (non-naturalized persons), naturalized persons (nationality acquirers), and others – can send international express mail to their home countries at reduced rates as long as they provide proof of identity at any of the 470 post offices in Gyeonggi-do. Acceptable proof of identity includes ID issued in one’s name, a Certificate of Family Relations (Marriage Certificate), or other documents confirming household members. From 2021, multicultural family members wishing to send mail must fill out all information on the label, such as the address of the sender and recipient, the contents being sent, etc. in English in accordance with the mandatory information provision requirements for advance customs clearance of international mail.According to Gyeonggi-do statistics, there have been 29,706 cases of rate reduction or exemption through this EMS rate reduction system in the past three years alone. As a result, multicultural families were able to save a total of KRW 154.51 million through discounted rates. If you calculate the reduction per case, it equates to an approximate discount of KRW 5,200. An Gyeonggi Provincial Government official said, “We hope that this will be a channel for conveying warm thoughts to family members in home countries at a time when visits to hometowns and other forms of travel have been restricted due to COVID-19.” The official added, “We will do our best to support multicultural families so that they can live in Korea as comfortably as in their home countries.”
