The future of the finely tuned administrative services of Gyeonggi Province is something to look forward to.
With the largest foreign population in Korea, Gyeonggi Province is implementing services to address issues that foreigners face in their daily lives. This includes an interpretation service to ensure effective communication with public authorities.
Danwon-gu, a district in Gyeonggi Province’s Ansan City, supports an interpretation service staffed by Chinese and Vietnamese volunteers from the volunteer group “Like a Family.”
This service has been introduced to satisfy exceptionally high demand among foreign residents of Danwon-gu for administrative assistance with marriage documentation, Korean citizenship acquisition, permanent residence, and naturalization.
The volunteer group “Like a Family” consists of retired principals and has been providing assistance with the filing of civil applications since 2009.
“I wanted to participate because I know how frustrating the language barrier can be when you have just started to settle in Korea.”
Gyeonggi Province has been providing a one-on-one
interpretation service to foreign migrants since 2020 with the help of the “Gyeonggi
Province Interpretation Supporters.”@Gyeonggi Province.
The service is actively operated in several provincial areas including the cities of Yongin, Bucheon, Hwaseong, Namyangju, Pyeongtaek, Uijeongbu, Paju, Siheung, Gimpo, and Pocheon as well as Gapyeong County.
The interpretation supporters have passed Level 4 of the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) or completed Stage 4 of the Korea Immigration and Integration Program (KIIP). They are utilizing their Korean linguistic skills to assist with civil applications, hospital treatments, and more.
The service is available in 18 languages including English, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, and Russian.
These supporters have played an especially valuable role in helping foreigners visit community health centers for COVID-19 testing by providing contactless interpretation assistance by phone.
They have also enthusiastically cooperated in facilitating the disbursement of Gyeonggi Province Disaster Basic Income to foreigners.
Gyeonggi Province is laying the foundation for the participation
of its 31 cities and counties.@Gyeonggi Province.
It is not only solving common problems residents face every day, but also assisting in the settlement of foreign migrants by empowering them with flexible and prompt communication means.
Through an administrative service that addresses the inconveniences generated by differences in language, Gyeonggi Province is enhancing the quality of its residents’ lives.
The future of the finely tuned administrative services of Gyeonggi Province is something to look forward to.
