audio guide service for Jeong Yak-yong

Namyangju City has launched an audio guide in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese for foreign visitors to its main cultural heritage attraction, the Jeong Yak-yong historic site.

The original Korean audio guide drew special attention as it was recorded by Korean heartthrob Jeong Hae-In, a sixth-generation grandson of Jeong Yak-Yong who is gaining popularity through the Netflix drama “D.P.”

Listed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, Jeong Yak-yong was a leading scholar of Silhak (“practical learning”) and a reformist in the late Joseon Dynasty. As an insightful scholar who was well-read in politics, literature, history, philosophy, science and technology, he wrote as many as 500 treatises including the renowned “Admonitions on Governing the People.”

Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was also designed by the true talent of none other than Jeong Yak-Yong. He was indeed a remarkable politician as well as a brilliant scientist who invented practical devises such as the geojunggi (complex pulley), baedari (pontoon bridge), and yoohyeonggeu (wagon).

The historic site commemorating Jeong Yak-yong is considered to be the top among 8 must-see views of Namyangju. The site features his birthplace (Yeoyudang) and his grave, as well as commemorative facilities such as Sadang Mundosa, the Dasan Memorial, and the Museum of Silhak.
