Gyeonggi Province lands an R&D center of Applied Materials, a top global semiconductor and display equipment enterprise
Gyeonggi Province Lands Applied Materials
R&D Center
The Korean semiconductor industry has held its
top position for over two decades. Semiconductors can be found everywhere in
our lives including smartphones, televisions, cars, credit cards, and even our
passports, and they are the foundation of the electronics industry. This is why
semiconductors are also referred to as a ‘staple of industry.’
In the semiconductor market, Korea is the
leader. Samsung Electronics has maintained the largest market share in the
memory semiconductor market (DRAM, NAND flash, etc.) for 28 years, and the
Korean semiconductor industry – including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix – has
maintained its top spot in the world for 18 years.
Amid these circumstances, one of the world’s largest semiconductor equipment manufacturers, Applied Materials (AMAT) of the US, has entered an agreement to build an R&D center in Gyeonggi Province. This investment by Applied Materials has solidified Korea’s position as the hub for the research and production facilities of the world’s top four semiconductor equipment manufacturers. Applied Materials concluded the investment MOU to establish its cutting-edge R&D center in Gyeonggi Province during the recent ‘Global Investment Summit.’ The investment size and period will be announced at a later date.
@Gyeonggi Province |
Applied Materials Korea has announced that it will build its R&D center in Korea so as to further improve its technological leadership. This is expected to accelerate the innovation of logic (non-memory semiconductors that perform logic calculations) and memory semiconductors through close cooperation with client companies.
The expansion of Applied Materials into Korea has made Korea the R&D base for three of the world’s four largest semiconductor equipment manufacturers alongside Lam Research (US) and Tokyo Electron (TEL, Japan). Applied Materials, based out of Silicon Valley, is the world’s largest semiconductor equipment manufacturer in terms of sales and market share, and it manufactures most of the equipment related to semiconductor processes for systems, memory, and more.
