Gyeonggi Province develops “Camp Greaves Historical Park”
@Gyeonggi Province
Gyeonggi Province has begun to promote the Camp Greaves Historical Park project in earnest and is striving to realize its goal of an opening in 2024.
Camp Greaves is the one of the few places that saw U.S. military forces stationed in the DMZ area for 50 years after the Korean War before they were dispatched to Iraq. The area maintains its historical value not only through the architectural style of the U.S. military but also through the remains of their lifestyles.
Once the Camp Greaves History Park is established, it is expected to revitalize tourism and the local economy of northern Gyeonggi Province through linkage with nearby tourist attractions.

Gyeonggi Province signed an agreement with the Korean Ministry of National Defense in April for a donation and loan project encompassing Camp Greaves. On August 17, ownership was transferred completely, and the site was taken over to promote the tourism industry.
The “Camp Greaves Donation Loan Project" was carried out through the donation of replacement facilities for the military to the Ministry of National Defense instead of transferring the properties to Gyeonggi Province. The agreement was successfully signed and the Camp Greaves Historical Park is finally seeing progress after 10 years.
Gyeonggi Province aims to create a symbolic area that can deliver a message of both the pain and peace that result from national division through the Camp Greaves project.
A total of KRW 7.4 billion has been budgeted this year to strengthen park infrastructure, starting with the installation of water supply facilities and paved roads. After that, the installation of facilities used by tourists, such as cafes and toilets, is scheduled to begin in earnest, gradually ensuring a safe environment such measures as CCTV systems.

The project is being developed in phases, including linkage with the nearby Imjingak Peace Park and Dorasan Peace Park, with the aim of a general opening in 2024. The comprehensive plan for cultural tourism is expected to be completed next year.
In addition, Gyeonggi Province has decided to carry out the “Ammunition Depot Project” by October. The plan is to incorporate artistic elements and transform the former depot into a cultural space.
This will consist of media art and installation art projects, including the use of projection mapping to create and reveal a space where visitors can experience both reality and virtual reality.
Camp Greaves, a symbol of the Cold War, is expected to transform into a cultural center as the years go by. Gyeonggi Province is actively promoting it, so we can see a brighter space in 2024.
