○ Governor Kim met with Ambassador Akiva Tor, the Israeli Ambassador to Korea, during his visit to the provincial government complex on September18
- Various areas of exchange and cooperation between Gyeonggi Province and Israel, including semiconductors, defense, and startups, were discussed.
Gyeonggi Province Governor Dong Yeon Kim met with Israeli Ambassador Akiva Tor to discuss collaboration on innovation industry development and exchanges between startups.
On the afternoon of September 18, Governor Kim met with Ambassador Akiva Tor at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Complex and said, "I think there are many areas in which Israel and Gyeonggi Province can exchange and collaborate, including startups, youths, and various fields such as semiconductors, defense, and startups. It would be good to proceed with practical discussions not only with the public sector but also with the private sector."
In response, Ambassador Akiva Tor expressed his agreement, saying, "Israel may be weak in manufacturing, but we have strengths in the field of innovation. We would like to cooperate with Gyeonggi Province in the semiconductor cluster sector,” adding, “We will make every effort to hold practical discussions so as to achieve mutually beneficial cooperation in all the fields you mentioned."
Ambassador Akiva Tor assumed his position as the Ambassador of the State of Israel to the Republic of Korea in November 2020. He is a diplomatic expert who has worked as the Director General of the World Religions and World Jewish Affairs Department and served as Consul General at the Israeli Consulate in San Francisco.
This meeting was held at the request of Ambassador Akiva Tor, who wanted to discuss Korea-Israel relations and cooperation in fields of innovation with Gyeonggi Province.
Both Korea and Israel share the commonality of overcoming domestic and international crises through human resources and technological development in challenging geopolitical environments. The Korea-Israel Free Trade Agreement, Israel’s first such agreement with an Asian country, came into effect in December of last year, expanding economic cooperation opportunities between the two countries.
Israel is also known for its growth in advanced industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, healthcare, and fintech. Governor Kim had previously agreed to expand economic cooperation between Gyeonggi Province and Israel in the economic sector during meetings with former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Yigal Erlich, Chairman of the Yozma Group, in May.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Government expects that this meeting will expand opportunities for exchanges and cooperation in various fields, including economics, technology, and human resources between Gyeonggi Province and Israel.
