When people think of Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province, the first thing that comes to mind is its iconic Budae Jjigae Street where you can savor Korea's beloved comfort food!
The Origins of Budae Jjigae
Over 50 years ago, during challenging times in Korea, many U.S. military bases were located in Uijeongbu City. During those days, Western ingredients like ham, sausage, and bacon sourced from the bases were considered valuable.
To balance out the richness of these ingredients, Koreans cooked them with traditional ingredients like kimchi, gochujang (red pepper paste), rice cakes, and fresh vegetables, creating the uniquely Korean fusion dish known as Budae Jjigae.
Budae Jjigae Street is conveniently located right outside Exit 2 of Uijeongbu Jungang Station, making it easily accessible for travelers on foot.
Situated next to the former Yangju County Office in Uijeongbu 1-dong, this street has grown into a local landmark since 1998, with restaurants opening up one by one. Today, more than ten Budae Jjigae restaurants line the street, with the original Odeng Sikdang, credited with inventing the dish, still serving visitors. People from Korea and abroad come to savor this distinctive stew. ❣️
Plan a visit and treat yourself to a hearty meal on Uijeongbu Budae Jjigae Street during this pleasant spring weather~!
