As the 75th anniversary of Korea-Spain diplomatic relations approaches in 2025,
Gyeonggi Province and the Community of Madrid have embarked
on an exciting new chapter of collaboration!
On November 25, Gyeonggi Province’s Governor Kim Dong-yeon and Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, met at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Complex to discuss future cooperation. Notably, this meeting also marked President Díaz Ayuso’s first visit to Korea, making it even more significant.
So, what did they discuss? Let’s dive into the details!
A Shared Vision for International Collaboration
Both leaders emphasized the importance of regional partnerships in the face of rapidly changing global dynamics. They agreed to establish communication channels to strengthen cooperation across diverse sectors, including AI and other advanced industries, startups, healthcare, and tourism.
Governor Kim highlighted the challenges of innovation by likening them to the "windmills of Don Quixote," a nod to Spain’s literary heritage and the governor’s own roots.
In response, President Díaz Ayuso expressed her intent to explore investment and digital transformation opportunities by visiting leading global companies based in Gyeonggi, such as Samsung, Hyundai, and LG. Madrid: The Economic Engine of Spain
Known as the economic powerhouse of Spain, the Community of Madrid leads the nation with a GDP of €262 billion in 2022, attracting 75% of Spain’s investments. Alongside its robust financial, insurance, and educational sectors, Madrid is celebrated for its rich cultural offerings, gastronomy, and world-class sports events.
With the most vibrant startup ecosystem in Spain, President Díaz Ayuso noted, “Madrid is an open and innovative region. Through this visit, I hope to strengthen economic, technological, and cultural ties with Gyeonggi Province.” Building on a Foundation of Collaboration
This isn’t the first time Gyeonggi Province and Spain have worked together.
In March, Governor Kim met Guillermo Kirkpatrick, the Spanish Ambassador to Korea, to discuss cooperative initiatives. In September, Gyeonggi partnered with South Summit, Spain’s leading global startup platform, to host the successful 2024 Gyeonggi Startup Summit.
Now, with this meeting, Gyeonggi aims to expand its collaboration into tourism and cultural exchange in addition to AI and startups. A Commitment to the Future
Both leaders pledged to continue developing their partnership through future official visits. Governor Kim expressed optimism, saying, “We look forward to enhanced cooperation not only in investment and corporate expansion but also in startups, AI, and tourism.”
Echoing his sentiments, President Díaz Ayuso stated, “I hope to achieve more significant outcomes together with Gyeonggi Province.”
75 Years of Friendship: A New Horizon
The year marks a historic milestone: 75 years of diplomatic relations between Korea and Spain. This serves as a meaningful foundation for Gyeonggi Province and Madrid to deepen their collaboration across advanced technology, startups, and cultural exchange.
This partnership promises to become a shining example of regional cooperation, paving the way for a brighter future for both nations.
