Gyeonggi Province is taking proactive steps to strengthen its international partnerships in response to the rapidly changing global economic landscape.
On February 6, Gyeonggi Province Governor Dong Yeon Kim met with Tamara Mawhinney, the Ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Korea, to discuss economic cooperation and the impact of recent protectionist trade measures.

Addressing Trade Protectionism and Economic Challenges
Amid growing global trade tensions, the United States recently announced a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, only to delay its implementation by a month just before enforcement. These trade policies could significantly affect South Korean companies operating in Canada and Mexico, especially those in the electric vehicle and battery industries.
During their meeting, Governor Kim and Ambassador Mawhinney explored sustainable economic cooperation strategies, reaffirming the strong ties between Gyeonggi Province and Canada.
Originally scheduled for 40 minutes, their discussion extended to nearly two hours, reflecting the depth of their dialogue. Key topics included trade cooperation, growth strategies, climate change initiatives, and artificial intelligence (AI) collaboration.
Governor Kim expressed his hope for continued expansion of Gyeonggi-Canada relations, to which Ambassador Mawhinney responded positively, emphasizing Canada’s openness to various business opportunities and her desire for ongoing discussions.
A History of Close Cooperation & Strengthening Global Partnerships
Gyeonggi Province and Canada have maintained a strong relationship over the years. Ambassador Mawhinney first visited Gyeonggi Province in September 2022 as Acting Ambassador, marking the beginning of a period of close collaboration.
In May 2023, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ambassador Mawhinney joined Governor Kim at a commemorative event for the Gapyeong Battle Memorial Trail, further solidifying their partnership.
Additionally, Gyeonggi Province has an active close relationship with British Columbia (BC), Canada. In May 2023, BC Premier David Eby visited Gyeonggi Province to sign the fourth implementation plan of their sister-state agreement. Later that year, Governor Kim traveled to BC to meet with Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin and Premier Eby to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation.
As Gyeonggi Province continues to adapt to the evolving global economy, it remains committed to reinforcing its international partnerships. The province’s engagement with Canada is a testament to its dedication to sustainable economic growth and collaboration.
